Baofeng Lake

Baofeng Lake occupies a narrow karst valley in the eastern section of the Wulingyuan area, its green water reflecting the sandstone columns that rise from the shoreline on three sides. Boat tours run continuously through the day, covering the full length of the lake in about 40 minutes; admission to the lake and the boat tour together cost around ¥90, separate from the main Wulingyuan park ticket.

The approach to the lake involves climbing 150 stone steps from the bus parking area — enough to deter some visitors and keep the atmosphere relatively calm compared to the main park areas. The boat tour provides views of the columns from water level, a different perspective from the elevated plateau viewpoints, and the enclosed valley creates a quality of stillness that the busier areas of the park rarely achieve. The lake connects to a short trail through Suoxiyu valley, where the karst scenery continues on a smaller scale and the path is narrow enough to feel genuinely quiet.

A story
Baofeng Lake occupies a valley that was dammed in 1979 — initially for water storage, then converted to a scenic attraction when the national park was being developed in the 1980s. The dam is invisible from the main viewing areas and the reservoir has integrated so completely into the surrounding karst that it reads as a natural feature. A local singer performs Tujia folk songs from a boat on the lake as part of the organised boat tour, a tradition that has continued for decades.
