Huangshizhai

Huangshizhai is the main elevated area of the southern section of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, at 1,050 metres the highest point accessible without entering the Yuanjiajie or Tianzi Mountain areas. The summit plateau is reached by cable car from the park entrance or on foot via a two-hour ascent through forest. A circuit of the ridge path takes about two hours and passes six major viewpoints, each framing the sandstone columns below from a different angle.

The view from Huangshizhai is the one that appears most frequently in photographs of Zhangjiajie: a wide panorama across a sea of column tops, stretching uninterrupted to the horizon. On clear days the effect is vertiginous despite the safety railings; in mist, the columns disappear and reappear as conditions shift, producing a more theatrical and arguably more satisfying experience. The cable car journey takes ten minutes and covers 1,100 metres of horizontal distance, crossing a gap where the valley opens briefly to show the scale of the terrain.

A story
The name Huangshizhai — Yellow Stone Stronghold — refers to a legend that a yellow rock at the summit was once used as a signalling stone by local defenders warning of approaching enemies. The cable car opened in 1993, one of the first major tourist infrastructure investments after the park's designation, and its construction without visible concrete pylons in the main viewshed was considered a significant technical achievement at the time.
