Xiangshawan — the Resonant Sand Ravine — is the main entry point to the Kubuqi Desert, a dune field at the northern edge of the Ordos Plateau that begins about 35 kilometres south of central Baotou. The landscape transitions abruptly here: the city's industrial outskirts give way to a belt of irrigated farmland, then the farmland stops and the dunes begin, rising to 50 or 60 metres in the areas nearest the car parks and considerably higher further into the desert.
The site is heavily commercialised, with zip lines, sand sledges, and camel rides competing for visitor attention. None of this diminishes the underlying landscape, which is spectacular and genuinely desert in character. Visitors willing to walk 30 minutes from the commercial area reach quieter dune terrain where the scale of the Kubuqi becomes apparent. Sunset from the higher dunes is frequently photographed and the colours — deep orange sand against a pale sky — justify the reputation. Admission around ¥120 including activity vouchers; a car from Baotou takes about 45 minutes.
