Baotou's attractions are distributed across a wide area and reward visitors who are willing to travel. The best excursions — Wudangzhao Lamasery to the northeast and Xiangshawan dunes to the south — are each 30 to 60 kilometres from the city centre and require planning. The city itself offers the Baotou Museum and a functional riverfront, but the surrounding landscape is the main event.
