Getting There

Wuhai Airport (IATA: WUA) connects to Beijing, Hohhot, Chengdu, and several other Chinese cities, with the Beijing flight taking about two hours. The airport is about 12 kilometres from the city centre.

By train, the main connections are from Hohhot (about four hours) and Baotou (about two hours) via the Baotou–Lanzhou line. The railway station is centrally located. Long-distance buses from Hohhot, Yinchuan, and Baotou also serve the city; the journey from Hohhot takes about three to four hours. From Yinchuan in Ningxia, the train takes about two hours, making Wuhai a practical stop on a journey between Inner Mongolia and the northwest.

Within the city, the three districts (Haibowan, Wuda, Wuhai proper) are connected by the Yellow River Road Bridge and by bus. Taxis are inexpensive and reliable; renting a car gives the most flexibility for the lake, canyon, and wetland sites scattered around the city.
