The Longyou Bay National Wetland Park on the northern end of Wuhai Lake protects a section of reed beds, shallow marsh, and riverine woodland that provides important stopover habitat for migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. The park's location at the junction of the Yellow River corridor and the desert edge means it attracts species from both ecosystems: waterbirds using the river margin and desert species moving between the dune fields and the agricultural land east of the river.
The boardwalk system within the park gives good access to the reed beds and the shallow lake margin without disturbing the birdlife. Spring and autumn are the best times: the April–May period brings nesting egrets and reed warblers, while October brings migrating raptors and flocks of waders. The park is one of the few green spaces in Wuhai where serious nature watching is possible and is significantly less commercialised than Jinsha Bay to the south.
