Dongpo Park occupies a stretch of the Grand Canal's bank in central Changzhou, named in honour of the Song dynasty poet and statesman Su Dongpo, who spent parts of his life and eventually died in this city. Entry is free, and the park is genuinely pleasant rather than just historically pious: old camphor trees, canal-side walkways, and pavilions that catch the breeze.
The adjacent Old Museum of Wisteria is housed in a small building where Su Shi is believed to have lived at the end of his life. The combined visit is unhurried and rewards an hour's exploration. The canal section here is one of the more photogenic stretches in Jiangsu, with working boats still passing and the scale human enough to appreciate rather than overwhelming.
