Xinfang Bridge

Xinfang Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge over the Shi River in the Tianning District of Changzhou, a quiet survivor of the canal city's older infrastructure. The bridge is modest in scale — this is not the Grand Canal itself but one of its tributary channels — which makes it all the more interesting: the small waterway setting, the old stone work, and the absence of tourist management give it a character that grander, better-publicised bridges often lack.

The bridge is within easy walking distance of the Old Museum of Wisteria and Dongpo Park, making it a natural part of an old-city walking circuit. The canal channel here still carries occasional small boats, and the narrow alleys on either side preserve some sense of the pre-development streetscape.

A story
Stone arch bridges like this one were the engineering standard for the Grand Canal's tributary waterways for over a thousand years. The Xinfang Bridge's gentle single-arch profile is a form that barely changed from the Song dynasty through to the Republican era — functional perfection that needed no revision.
