Nanjing's most concentrated nightlife is in the Fuzimiao (Confucius Temple) area along the Qinhuai River, where bars, tea houses, and restaurants line the water. The nearby 1912 Block — named for the year of the Republic — is a pedestrianised entertainment district with cocktail bars, live music venues, and late-night food. Shanghai Lu in Gulou district has a cluster of western-friendly bars and cafes around the expat community.
For coffee, independent cafes have proliferated around the Gulou and Xinjiekou areas. Librairie Avant-Garde's underground location on the Wutai Mountain campus is a destination in itself — excellent coffee in a former bomb shelter.
