Nanjing has a well-developed public transport network that makes getting around straightforward, even for visitors who don't speak Chinese.
Metro
Nanjing's metro system has expanded considerably and now covers most areas of interest to travellers. Signs and announcements are in both Chinese and English. Fares are distance-based, starting at 2 RMB. The metro is the easiest way to reach Purple Mountain, the Confucius Temple area, and the main railway stations.
Bus
Buses are cheap (1-2 RMB) but have limited English signage. Having your destination written in Chinese characters is essential. Long-distance city buses have conductors who sell distance-based tickets and help passengers find their stop.
Taxi
Taxis are plentiful and affordable — most rides within the city centre come to 20 RMB or less. Drivers generally do not speak English, so have your destination written in Chinese. Taxis can be difficult to flag during the 5-6pm shift change.
