Nanjing's main shopping areas are concentrated in Xinjiekou and along Zhongshan Lu. The Deji and Jinmao shopping malls are the upscale options. For street shopping, the Hunan Lu pedestrian area has mid-range clothing and food stalls, while Shiziqiao used book market near the university area is good for secondhand Chinese books and old maps.
The Fuzimiao tourist market sells stone carvings, cloud brocade fabric (a Nanjing speciality), painted fans, and the usual souvenir range. Cloud brocade (云锦), woven on large traditional looms with gold and silver thread, is the city's most distinguished craft tradition — it was used for imperial robes during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Genuine cloud brocade is expensive and available at certified shops in the old city area.
