Great Bao'en Temple Ruins Park

Archaeological park and modern museum on the site of Nanjing’s famed Porcelain Tower.

Great Bao'en Temple Ruins Park occupies one of Nanjing’s most storied Buddhist sites. The Ming-era Porcelain Tower that once stood here was famous across Asia and Europe for its glazed tiles and height, then disappeared in the violence of the 19th century. The present park layers excavated foundations, relic displays, and a modern pagoda-like tower over that memory.

It is a polished, reconstructed place rather than a romantic ruin, but the historical weight is real. Visit for the underground remains and museum exhibits, then step outside to see how the new architecture tries to evoke the vanished tower without pretending to be it. It is one of Nanjing’s better stops for understanding the city beyond the Ming walls and Republican monuments.
