Qingliangshan (清凉山) is a small forested hill park in the western part of the old city, less visited than the Purple Mountain complex and more relaxed for it. The hill was a retreat for the Southern Tang dynasty rulers in the 10th century — Li Yu, the last Southern Tang emperor and one of China's finest classical poets, is associated with this spot. A pavilion commemorating him stands on the summit.
The park is popular with older Nanjing residents for morning exercise and afternoon tea. The view from the top of the hill across the old city to the Ming wall and beyond is fine, particularly in late afternoon light. A short detour from the Mochou Lake area, easily combined on a walk along the western section of the old city.
