Xuzhou Han Terracotta Warriors Museum

The Xuzhou Han Terracotta Warriors Museum, at the Shizi Mountain scenic area, displays more than four thousand small terracotta soldier and cavalry figures excavated from a burial pit associated with the early Han kings of Chu. The pit was discovered in 1984 and the scale of the find was significant enough to earn the comparison with Xi'an that follows the site.

The museum presents the warriors in their original burial arrangement, which is more documentary than theatrical — rows of figures organised by type, with the excavation context carefully preserved. The surrounding Shizi Mountain park includes additional Han-period burial sites and some reconstructed Han architecture. The combination makes a half-day trip, best combined with a visit to the Guishan tombs or the Xuzhou Museum.

A story
Unlike Xi'an's soldiers, which stand life-size and in battle order, Xuzhou's Han terracotta army is made of figures roughly half a metre tall — smaller, cheaper to produce, and buried in formations arranged not for war but for ceremonial procession. The difference reflects the Han preference for representation over literalism: the point was symbolic presence, not actual military force.
