Xuzhou is northern Jiangsu's largest city and one of China's most important rail junctions, sitting roughly halfway between Beijing and Shanghai on the high-speed corridor. That transit role has shaped the place — the streets around Xuzhou East station feel polished and fast-moving, while older neighborhoods near the downtown station preserve something rougher and more genuinely local, all narrow alleys, wet markets, and fortune tellers working the riverbank promenade. For most travellers Xuzhou is a stop rather than a destination, but those who pause find the city rewards the detour.
The city's most compelling draw is its Han Dynasty heritage. The Guishan tombs cut directly into a hillside contain the burial chambers of a king of the ancient state of Chu, complete with fine jade burial suits — quieter and more atmospheric than Xi'an's famous warriors, with whom Xuzhou's own smaller terracotta army inevitably gets compared. The Huaihai Campaign Memorial Museum is equally worth an hour: the 1948–49 battle fought around this city was one of the decisive engagements of the Chinese Civil War, and the museum explains how and why without excessive triumphalism.
Xuzhou has its own recognizable food culture, distinct from the refined Huaiyang cooking of the province's south. Diguo ji — chicken braised hard with dried chillies and served with a ring of bread half-submerged in the pot's broth — is the signature dish, warming and substantial. Sha tang, a thick peppery soup made with eel and shredded chicken, is the traditional breakfast option; Ma Shi Jie is the street most associated with it. Dog meat served in sesame flatbreads on Heqing Lu is a local speciality that draws strong opinions.
Getting here is straightforward: Xuzhou East serves all Beijing–Shanghai high-speed trains, while the older downtown station handles slower services and is more convenient for the city centre. Be careful with tickets — Xuzhou (徐州) and Suzhou (苏州) look similar enough in Roman letters to cause genuine booking errors, and the cities are 400 km apart.
