Guifeng Scenic Area

Guifeng Scenic Area (龟峰景区) is a cluster of reddish sandstone Danxia formations rising from the plains south of Shangrao city, accessible by bus in about 30 minutes from the center. The rock formations — columns, pillars, and isolated spires of eroded red sandstone — create a landscape that feels more like an alien movie set than a Chinese scenic area. The area is significantly less visited than the better-known Danxia landscapes in Guangdong or other provinces, which makes exploration more peaceful.

Walking trails connect the main formations with Buddhist temples built into cliff alcoves and viewpoints overlooking the Xinjiang River valley below. The full circuit takes three to four hours. The combination of dramatic geology, genuine religious sites still in use, and low tourist density makes Guifeng one of the better arguments for stopping in Shangrao rather than rushing straight to Sanqingshan.

A story
The "Giant Buddha of Guifeng" — a naturally occurring rock formation in the Guifeng mountains that, from a specific vantage point, resembles an enormous reclining figure — is one of China's less easily explained geological coincidences. The figure is convincing enough that it has become a significant draw for Buddhist pilgrims alongside the more secular visitors attracted by the Danxia landscape. The best viewing angle requires reaching a particular lookout trail section; local guides know the spot.
