Shangrao

Northeastern Jiangxi city used as a gateway to Sanqingshan peaks and Wuyuan villages.

Shangrao is the prefecture-level city in northeastern Jiangxi that contains, within its administrative reach, two of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in the province: Sanqingshan and the rural villages of Wuyuan county. As a city it is compact and fairly ordinary, but its position on high-speed rail lines connecting Shanghai to Kunming has made it an increasingly viable base for exploring a region that rewards slow travel. Borders with Zhejiang, Fujian, and Anhui provinces converge nearby, and the cultural blending is evident in the architecture and cuisine.

Guifeng Scenic Area, accessible by bus from the city center, showcases the Danxia landforms typical of this part of southeastern China — clusters of reddish sandstone pillars that include a naturally formed giant reclining Buddha visible from the main trail viewpoint. The area is less visited than the province's headline mountains and accordingly more peaceful. Xinzhou old town, within the city's urban core, preserves a section of old town walls and some Ming-dynasty streetscapes that would be significant heritage sites in less well-endowed parts of the country.

The city's most useful role for most visitors is as an overnight stop that breaks up the journey between Wuyuan's villages and Sanqingshan. There is decent accommodation at various price points and no shortage of Jiangxi-style restaurants. Spring is the prime season for the region: Wuyuan's canola fields peak in March and April, and the mountains above are clear and cool before summer humidity sets in.
