Shangrao Museum

The Shangrao Museum covers the history of the prefecture with an emphasis on the extraordinary cultural geography of the region — the meeting point of Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Anhui. The collection includes examples of local porcelain and ceramics influenced by the proximity to Jingdezhen, Qing-dynasty documents from the Huizhou merchant community who built the Wuyuan villages, and natural history exhibits covering the Sanqingshan geology and the ecological diversity of the region's mountain ranges.

The museum is modest in size but provides useful context for the more visually dramatic experiences at Guifeng and Sanqingshan. The exhibition on the Huizhou merchant culture — the wealthy trading families whose wealth built the villages of Wuyuan — is particularly informative. Entry is free.
