Cafés and wine bars in the streets around Zhongshan Square occupy some of the old colonial buildings, giving them a character rarely found in Chinese cities. The atmosphere is unhurried and the coffee is taken seriously. In the evenings the same streets host a mix of bars that stay open late. The tram routes make it practical to move between the main squares on foot or by tram rather than hailing taxis.
