Getting Around

Trams and buses cover the city centre well and are the most atmospheric way to get around. The tram network (three lines, flat fare) links the main colonial-era squares. Taxis are cheap and plentiful; the meter starts at 10 yuan. DiDi (the Chinese ride-hailing app) is the most convenient option for cross-city journeys and requires a Chinese mobile number or a tourist-mode account.

The metro system is expanding and now reaches most major districts. The beaches south of the centre — Fujiazhuang, Tiger Beach — are 30 to 40 minutes from the city centre by bus or taxi. The city is hilly in places, which makes taxis useful for some routes that look short on a map but involve steep climbs on foot.
