Yushu has an airport (Batang Airport) with daily connections to Xining, Chengdu, and Lhasa. Flights are the practical choice for most visitors; the bus from Xining is a 12 to 20 hour journey crossing high mountain passes, spectacular but genuinely demanding. If you take the bus, choose a daytime service where possible to see the landscape.
The altitude at Yushu — 3,700 metres — is serious. Acclimatising in Xining (2,270 metres) for a day or two before arriving is recommended. Do not exert yourself on the first day, and be aware of the symptoms of acute mountain sickness: headache, nausea, difficulty sleeping. Descending to lower altitude immediately relieves most symptoms.
