The Zhouyuan area, straddling the border of Baoji and Fufeng counties, is the original homeland of the Zhou people — the archaeological site of the earliest Zhou settlements, dating back to around 1200 BCE. This is where the founders of the Zhou dynasty accumulated their agricultural surplus, refined their bronze-working technology, and developed the ritual and political practices that they would impose on all of China after their conquest of the Shang.
The Zhouyuan Museum on the site documents the excavations of this area, which have been ongoing since the 1970s and continue to produce important finds. The museum is more specialised than the Bronzeware Museum in Baoji city and attracts mainly scholars and history enthusiasts rather than general visitors. For those with a serious interest in Bronze Age China, it is an essential complement to the main museum.
