Chengshantou is the absolute eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, the point marketed as the first place on mainland China to see the sunrise — which is roughly accurate on a clear morning. The headland commands views in three directions across the Yellow Sea and has a dramatic quality that comes from geography rather than construction: sheer cliffs, the visible meeting of currents, and on good days visibility extending many kilometers over open water.
The scenic area at the cape includes a section of ancient wall attributed to the Qi state, a temple with the expected Taoist mythology, and a large altar complex at the water's edge. The park is well managed and busy with domestic tourists in summer. Chengshantou is about 40 kilometers east of central Weihai and easiest to reach by taxi or bus.
