Weihai Swan Lake

Weihai Swan Lake is a coastal wetland north of the city that functions as an important winter habitat for migratory whooper swans. The spectacle at peak season — November through February — is genuinely dramatic: thousands of large white birds on a shallow lake, the backdrop of coastal hills, and on cold clear days the air carrying the loud bugling calls across the water.

The wetland has been protected and managed for ecotourism, with viewing platforms, boardwalks through the reed beds, and feeding stations. Beyond swans, the site supports a range of migratory waterbirds including various duck and goose species. The lake is a short taxi or bus ride north of central Weihai; admission is charged during peak swan season.

A story
Weihai Swan Lake hosts several thousand whooper swans every winter — by some counts one of the largest wintering concentrations in East Asia. The swans arrive in November and remain until March, feeding in the shallow coastal wetland. Local residents have been feeding them for decades, and the birds have become accustomed to human presence to an unusual degree; it is possible to walk quite close.
