Customs House and Colonial Architecture

1927 neo-classical customs building anchoring the northern end of the Bund

The 52 buildings of the Bund's historic waterfront, most built between 1910 and 1935, represent the most complete concentration of early 20th-century commercial architecture in Asia. The sequence runs from the former British Consulate at the north end through the Customs House (1927, with its distinctive four-sided clock tower), the former HSBC Building (1923, now the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank), and the Sassoon House at the south end.

Most of these buildings are now occupied by banks, luxury hotels, and high-end retailers. The ground floors are often accessible to visitors; the rooftop terraces of the M on the Bund restaurant and several other establishments offer aerial views of the facade sequence. The building interiors vary considerably in what survives of their original decoration.
