The Shanghai Metro is one of the largest and fastest-growing systems in the world — over 20 lines covering virtually everywhere worth going, signage and announcements bilingual, and fares of around 3-9 RMB. Get a rechargeable Shanghai Public Transport Card or pay via Alipay/WeChat QR. Taxis are cheap by international standards (start around 16 RMB) but drivers rarely speak English — have your destination written in Chinese characters. Didi (the local Uber equivalent) is universal. Bike-share schemes (Hellobike, Meituan) cover the city densely; the French Concession is particularly good on two wheels. The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel between Puxi and Pudong is a kitsch but iconic way to cross the river; the regular ferry is cheaper and more interesting.
