Wukang Road (Historic Residential)

Curved residential street in Xuhui district lined with plane trees and heritage villas

A curved residential street in the Xuhui district, on the southern edge of the former French Concession, that has become one of Shanghai's most photographed streets for its concentration of early 20th-century residential architecture: Art Deco apartment buildings, neo-classical villas, and Norman-style houses from the 1920s and 1930s. The Wukang Mansion (1924), a French-style apartment building at the northern end of the street, is the most visible landmark.

The street's curve — unusual in Shanghai's grid — is because it follows an old watercourse. Walking the full length (about 400 metres) passes a dozen architecturally significant buildings in continuous streetscape. The surrounding lanes have café terraces under the plane trees that fill on weekend afternoons.
