Propaganda Poster Art Centre

Private collection of 6,000 Chinese propaganda posters from the Maoist era

A private collection of 6,000 Chinese propaganda posters from the Maoist era (1949–1979), displayed in a basement space in a residential building in the French Concession. The collection is the largest of its kind accessible to the public and documents the full range of visual propaganda produced during the People's Republic's first three decades.

The posters are arranged chronologically and thematically, showing the stylistic evolution from Soviet-influenced Socialist Realism through the Cultural Revolution's revolutionary aesthetic. The collection is emotionally complex — the graphic design quality of many posters is genuinely high, and the subject matter ranges from agricultural collectivisation to the purges. Admission charged; the location is unmarked. Huashan Road basement; Metro Changshu Road.
