Ohel Moishe Synagogue (Jewish Refugees Museum)

Former Ashkenazi synagogue on Changyang Road, now a museum of Shanghai's Jewish refugee history

The former Ohel Moishe Synagogue on Changyang Road, built in 1927 by the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Hongkou, now houses the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum documenting the 20,000 European Jews who found sanctuary in Shanghai during the Holocaust. The exhibition covers the arrival and daily life of the refugee community in Hongkou, the Japanese occupation's eventual concentration order in 1943, and the postwar dispersal.

The museum is the most comprehensive Holocaust memorial in Asia and the primary documentation of Shanghai's unique role as a refuge. The synagogue building is preserved; the museum occupies additional floors. Survivor testimonies, photographs, and artefacts from the refugee community are central to the exhibition. Open daily; admission charged. Changyang Road at Zhoushan Road; Metro Tilanqiao.
