A 1920 Sephardic Jewish synagogue on North Shaanxi Road — the largest synagogue in the Far East when it was built — constructed by Jacob Elias Sassoon as a memorial to his wife. The building is in a neo-classical style, with a large ark and women's gallery, and is one of the few surviving monuments to Shanghai's Sephardic Jewish community.
Access to the interior requires advance permission through the Shanghai Jewish community or the Israeli Consulate; the exterior is visible from the street. The building is on the National Register and has been restored. The surrounding blocks in Jing'an retain some of the Jewish commercial and residential fabric from the pre-war period — several other former Jewish institutions are within walking distance.
