Shanghai's oldest surviving mosque, the Peach Garden Mosque (Xiao Taoyuan Mosque) on Xiaotaoyuan Street dates from 1917 and serves as the principal mosque for Shanghai's Muslim community. The building is in a modified Chinese traditional style — tiled roofs, ornamental screens — adapted for Islamic use.
The mosque is unusual in Chinese urban history for its location within the Old Town's residential fabric, reflecting the longstanding presence of Muslim merchants in the city's commercial history. Visits outside prayer times are generally welcomed; head covering is required for women. The surrounding lanes of the Old Town, relatively free of tourist development, are worth exploring around the mosque. Xiaotaoyuan Street near Zhonghua Road.
