The most architecturally satisfying of Pudong's three signature skyscrapers — an 88-storey tower built in 1998 that incorporates traditional Chinese pagoda proportions into its glass-and-steel exterior in a way that actually works. The tower steps back in thirteen stages that echo the horizontal banding of Tang Dynasty towers, tapering to a spire at 421 metres.
The observation deck on the 88th floor offers good views, but the more dramatic experience is looking down from the hotel atrium inside — the Grand Hyatt occupies floors 54 to 87 around a hollow cylinder that drops 36 floors to the lobby below. Visitors can take the lift to the atrium floor and look down for free. The full observation deck has an admission charge. Metro Line 2, Lujiazui station.
