The site of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the largest in history (73 million visitors), stretches along both banks of the Huangpu River south of the city center. Most Expo pavilions have been demolished, but the China Pavilion (now the China Art Museum) and the Expo Culture Centre (now Mercedes-Benz Arena, the main indoor concert venue) are the surviving landmarks.
The China Art Museum (free entry) is one of the largest art museums in the world and holds the definitive collection of modern Chinese art — paintings, sculpture, and prints from the May Fourth Movement through to contemporary production. The building's scale is extraordinary: the former national pavilion is a square piled structure intended to evoke a traditional bracket-set construction at urban scale.
