Zhongshan Road South (Nanpu Bridge)

Nanpu Bridge over the Huangpu River, the first of Shanghai's modern cable-stayed bridges

The Nanpu Bridge over the Huangpu River, completed in 1991, was the first of Shanghai's six major river crossings and connects the Huangpu district to the Pudong New Area. The approach ramp on the west bank, which spirals down from bridge height to street level over a 1-kilometre radius, is an extraordinary piece of infrastructure engineering visible from the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel exit.

The bridge deck observation area (accessible by the spiral ramp on foot) provides one of the city's less-visited elevated views: the river below, the Lujiazui towers across, and the shipping traffic on the Huangpu. The bridge area is primarily industrial and residential; the reason to visit is the infrastructure itself and the unpopulated observation access.
