The main viewing area along the Shanxi bank is developed with a paved walkway and a series of platforms at different heights, allowing you to look directly down into the gorge or view the falls from across the river. The best view is from the lower platform, reached by a steep staircase, where you are close enough to feel the spray and watch the churning base pool below the falls. In summer, rainbow mist hovers permanently above the gorge; in winter, ice formations build along the cliff faces and the flow narrows to reveal the raw geometry of the rock channel.
The sandstone ledges above the falls — exposed at lower water levels — are accessible on foot from the main viewpoint area, and walking out onto them gives a vertiginous view of the river accelerating toward the constriction below. Take care: the ledges are slippery when wet and there is no barrier beyond a certain point. Early mornings are far quieter than midday, when tour groups are densest, and the light on the spray is better in the first two hours after dawn.
