When to Go

Autumn — September through November — is the best time to visit Jincheng for two reasons: the Taihang Mountains east of the city turn vivid red and orange from October, and the cooler temperatures make walking the outdoor village sites far more pleasant than the summer heat. Spring is also good, with blossom on the mountain slopes and fewer visitors than the October peak.

Summer can be hot and humid in the valley bottom, though the higher village sites in the Taihang foothills are noticeably cooler. Winter closes some of the more remote sites and can make mountain road access difficult, but the Yuhuang Temple and the Huangcheng compound are accessible year-round.
