The central monastic cluster around Taihuai is walkable: most of the famous temples — Xiantong, Tayuan, Pusading, Luohou, Yuanzhao, Shuxiang — are within a fifteen-minute walk of each other along a single ridge. Wear shoes that can handle stone steps and the occasional dirt path; the routes between temples sometimes climb steeply.
For anywhere further afield — the five terrace summits, Foguang Temple, Nanchan Temple, Jinge Temple — the practical options are minivan and hired car. Minivans run from Taihuai to each of the five terraces and to the closer outlying temples during the warm months, with fixed routes and fares. For the more remote Tang temples south of the mountain, hire a car for a half or full day; this is the standard way of seeing them and is not expensive shared between two or three people.
