Bishan Temple

A working Chan monastery a short walk north of Taihuai

Bishan Temple — also known as Guangji Maopeng — sits in a wooded enclave just north of Taihuai, far enough from the bus park that the day-tripper crowds rarely reach it. It is a working Chan monastery, and the atmosphere is correspondingly purposeful: monks in robes carrying buckets of water, sutra chanting from the back hall, a single elderly bell-ringer up in the bell tower.

The compound is small and easily walked in twenty minutes. Look for the main hall's painted ceiling beams, the modest collection of Ming-period bronzes in the side shrine, and the carp pond in the inner courtyard. The walk up from Taihuai takes about half an hour along a quiet road through fir forest, and is one of the most pleasant short excursions in the central valley.
