Luohou Temple

A Tibetan-style temple with a famous mechanical lotus

Luohou Temple sits on the lower part of the ridge that runs up to Pusading, in a compact compound between the village and the climb. It was originally a Han Buddhist monastery and was rebuilt in Tibetan-Buddhist style in the Qing dynasty when the Mongol and Manchu emperors brought their preferred form of monastic practice to Wutaishan. The result is a small, intricate complex of halls with the bright primary colours and gilded ornaments of a Gelug-school monastery, set within the slightly different proportions of a Chinese temple plan.

The unusual sight inside is the kaihua xianfo, a large wooden mechanical lotus in the main hall whose eighteen petals can be opened and closed by a temple attendant. When the petals open, four small Buddhas are revealed sitting inside the flower. The mechanism is centuries old and still works. Plan a short, quiet visit between busier stops; the monks here are used to foreign visitors and will demonstrate the lotus on request.
