Getting There

Taiyuan is well-connected by high-speed rail. From Beijing (Beijing West station), trains take just under three hours on the Datong-Xi'an high-speed line. From Xi'an, the journey is about two hours. From Datong, about 90 minutes. The main high-speed station is Taiyuan South, in the southern suburbs; the older Taiyuan Railway Station in the city centre handles conventional trains to Pingyao and smaller Shanxi destinations not yet on the high-speed network.

Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, north of the city, connects to most major Chinese cities and has a few international routes. Airport buses and taxis connect to the city in 30–45 minutes. Within Shanxi, long-distance buses cover the routes that trains don't, particularly to rural destinations and smaller county towns.
