Taiyuan's nightlife and café scene is modest by the standards of China's more cosmopolitan cities but has grown considerably in the last decade. The main concentration is in the streets around Qiaojiayuan and the riverside development on the west bank, where a mix of coffee shops, craft beer bars, and casual restaurants has established itself. Locals drink baijiu (the fiery sorghum spirit that is the default social drink throughout Shanxi) rather than wine or cocktails, but most bars in the city-centre area stock something for every preference.
