Qixian County, about 100 km south of Taiyuan, is home to the Wang Family Compound (Wangjia Dayuan) — one of the largest and most elaborate private residences ever built in China. The compound was built in stages between the 17th and 19th centuries by the Wang clan, whose fortunes derived from the long-distance trade networks that crisscrossed Shanxi during the Qing dynasty. The complex extends across several hillsides, with over 1,000 rooms arranged in courtyards connected by covered passageways, stone staircases, and defensive walls.
The Wang Family Compound is comparable in ambition to the Forbidden City and considerably more complex in its spatial organisation. The scale is overwhelming on first encounter — most visitors underestimate how long it takes to walk the whole complex. The decorative carving on gates, screens, columns, and rooflines is extraordinarily detailed, representing the accumulated craft investment of generations. Qixian is also close to Pingyao, making a natural day combining both sites from Taiyuan.
