The Guandi Temple at Jiezhou, about 20 km north of Yuncheng, is the grandest of the hundreds of temples to Guan Yu across China — a Ming and Qing complex of considerable scale that celebrates the birthplace of the deified Three Kingdoms general. The site draws pilgrims year-round, from individual worshippers burning incense to organised groups from business associations and fraternal organisations who maintain a particular devotion to Guan Yu as a patron deity.
The main hall contains a large red-faced statue of Guan Yu in his warrior guise, flanked by his famous retinue. The overall complex — with its ceremonial gates, drum tower, bell tower, pavilions, and side shrines — is impressive in scale and gives a sense of the sustained investment of temple patronage over four centuries. The surrounding town of Jiezhou has a small old quarter worth a brief walk before returning to Yuncheng.
