Jiuyan Bridge Bar District

The Jiuyan Bridge area along the Jinjiang River is Chengdu's main bar and nightlife zone. A riverside promenade lined with bars, restaurants, and clubs runs from the bridge eastward, particularly lively on weekend evenings. The clientele is now mainly Chinese twentysomethings, with a smaller foreign contingent than in the expat heyday.

Bar quality ranges from craft beer bars and live music venues to the usual club-style places. The most interesting stretch is around the bridge itself and the backstreets behind it. For something different, the Lan Kwai Fong development (modelled on the Hong Kong bar district of the same name) is a few blocks away and has a higher concentration of upmarket bars.

A story
The bar strip along Jiuyan Bridge and the adjacent riverside walkway became Chengdu's main nightlife zone in the 2000s when the city's foreign expat community was larger. Several international embassies and consulates are nearby, and the area attracted the restaurants, bars, and coffee shops that followed. The US Consulate closed in 2020 following a diplomatic dispute; the bar district has survived the reduction in its original clientele and evolved into a mainstream Chengdu nightlife destination.
