Chengdu has an extensive and expanding metro system (12+ lines as of 2024) that connects the main tourist areas efficiently. Metro signs are bilingual; the app-based ticketing requires a Chinese phone number. Taxis and DiDi (Chinese Uber) are cheap and widely available. Walking is pleasant in the central districts — Tianfu Square, Chunxi Road, Wenshu, and Kuanzhai Xiangzi are all within comfortable walking distance of each other.
For day trips to Sanxingdui, Qingcheng Shan, or Dujiangyan, high-speed trains from Chengdu East or North stations are fast and inexpensive. The Leshan Giant Buddha is reached by high-speed train or tourist bus. For Jiuzhaigou and western Sichuan, flights, tourist buses, or hire cars are the practical options.
