Du Fu (712–770), one of the towering figures of Tang poetry, fled the An Lushan rebellion to Chengdu and lived here in a simple thatched cottage for four years. He wrote some 240 poems during that period — a remarkable run that produced many of his most personal works. The cottage itself is a much-rebuilt reconstruction, but the surrounding 20 hectares of gardens, ponds and bamboo groves are genuinely lovely and a fine place to escape the city heat.
