The base on the northern edge of Chengdu is the single best place in the world to see giant pandas. Set in 100 hectares of bamboo forest that mimics their natural habitat, it houses dozens of pandas of all ages, plus the smaller and feistier red pandas. Arrive at opening time (7:30am), when the pandas are most active and have not yet retreated into shade for their long midday nap. Allow at least three hours; a frequent shuttle bus runs from central Chengdu, or take metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue.
