Wuhou — "Minister of War" — was the title given to Zhuge Liang, the brilliant strategist of the Three Kingdoms period immortalised in the classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The shrine is dedicated to him and to Liu Bei, founder of the Shu Han state, whose tomb sits within the grounds. The complex of red walls, cypress-shaded courtyards and statue halls is one of the most atmospheric in Chengdu, and adjoins the lively Jinli pedestrian street, so the two are easily combined.
