Lulang Forest Sea

Lulang Forest Sea (鲁朗林海) is a high-altitude forest and alpine meadow ecosystem stretching across roughly 30 square kilometres east of Bayi, between 2,800 and 4,300 metres. It looks nothing like the treeless plateau most visitors associate with Tibet — dense stands of spruce, fir, and rhododendron cover the hillsides, threaded by meadow paths where yaks graze against a backdrop of snow peaks.

The area is best known for its spring wildflower bloom (April to June) and its autumn colours (October), but the walk through the forest is worthwhile any time. A wooden boardwalk loop through the main meadow is the easiest option; longer trails climb into the surrounding hills. The Lulang Stone Pot Chicken — a local dish cooked in a stone pot with wild mushrooms and herbs — is sold at restaurants along the main road and worth stopping for.

A story
At elevations above 3,500 metres, this alpine meadow produces some of Tibet's most spectacular wildflower displays each spring — rhododendrons, gentians, and primulas covering the hillsides while snow peaks still rise behind them.
