Temo La is a high mountain pass in the hills north of Bayi, sitting on the edge of the transition zone between the barren Tibetan plateau to the west and the forested Nyingchi valleys to the east. The pass offers views down into the Niyang River valley and is draped in the dense forest of rhododendron and fir that characterises this part of Tibet.
The pass is reached via a switchback road from Bayi and is a good stopping point on drives deeper into the prefecture. At the summit, the usual array of prayer flags marks the Tibetan custom of acknowledging a mountain threshold. The surrounding hills offer some of the best high-altitude forest walking in the region.
